Full Programme
10am – 11am: Solidarity Not Scapegoating
Plenary session with speakers from groups being punished by austerity.
• Focus E15: demanding “Social Housing not Social Cleansing”.
• Brighton Benefits Campaign • Disabled People Against Cuts • More speakers tbc
11am – 12:45pm: What are we up against?
Short talks introducing issues we are facing in the struggle for democracy and against austerity. Each talk will last 45 minutes and will run twice, so you can go to two!
• The housing crisis and social cleansing in London and the South East. Featuring: Focus E15; Brighton Living Rent Campaign
• Fuel, climate and inequality: How the fossil fuel industry is punishing the poor in the UK and globally. Featuring: Fuel Poverty Action, Brighton Action Against Fracking
• How multinational corporations are robbing us of our democratic voice. Featuring: WDM/Global Justice Now; Sussex Defend the NHS; Campaign for Education
Plus short films in the auditorium, including:
• Pay Slip Shut Down: A short radical documentary film about a Solidarity Federation dispute over wages
Stalls from loads of local campaigns, throughout the morning and lunch time
12:45pm – 2pm: Free lunch!
• Performance poetry from Janine Booth
• Music from Robb Johnson
• Hear from local campaigners about how you can get involved
2pm – 3:30pm: What can we do about it?
Practical skills for campaigning and strategies for action
• Art and Activism – how creativity, music and theatre can make our campaigns more powerful
• Resistance in the workplace – news of inspiring collective action by workers in Brighton and beyond.
• Alternatives to austerity – a focus on the nitty gritty of why the rich are getting richer and how we can turn things around through challenging the status quo of tax and debt.
• Occupations - People's parliaments. What happens in an occupation? Does reclaiming physical spaces empower people to think differently?
3:30pm – 4:30pm: What next?
Closing plenary session: How can we work together to fight the cuts here in Brighton? Bring your ideas and find others to work with you! |
