Hello Friends,

This Email tells you about three important events that Brighton People's Assembly are organising collaboratively with other organisations that are challenging the myth of austerity to strengthen our collective voice:
  • 1 February - Public Meeting and discussion about cuts to the Youth Service and other public services
  • 4 March  - National Demonstration in support of the NHS
  • 20 March - I Daniel Blake - Free screening
In these challenging times locally, nationally and internationally we all need to join together and clearly state that what's happening to key services is not acceptable and that there are real sustainable alternatives.

It's time for us all to take on our individual responsibilities and talk with our friends and neighbours and make our voices heard.

Thanks for reading and we hope you can join in with one or more of these forthcoming events.

Public Meeting and Discussion

Support our Youth Services - Support Public Services – No to Government Cuts
Wednesday 1 February 19:30 @ The Brighthelm Centre Auditorium  North Road Brighton

We are most concerned about the cuts being made by the City Council that will completely destroy the City's Youth Services and significantly affect others services and jobs this year.

It's all a step too far!

We fully realise that these cuts are as a result of massive reductions in Government funding to Local Authorities.  Should we stand by and watch this happen? What can we do? What can the organisations and political parties we belong to do? What can our elected members do?

This public meeting will not just provide a forum for people to come together and hear what's going on, but will also provide an inclusive opportunity for people in groups to work out constructive action to oppose these regressive changes in our society.

This People's Assembly event is in partnership with B&HCC Unison, PreQual, Brighton and Hove Trades Council, Brighton and Hove Green Party, Protect the Youth Service and the Socialist Workers Party

For more information about the Protect Youth Services campaign - see facebook group here.
National Demonstration
Saturday 4 March 12pm Tavistock Square and then march to Parliament
  • For a fully funded, publicly owned, NHS & social care service
  • No cuts, no closures, no privatisation
  • End the pay restraint for NHS staff

Brighton and Hove People’s Assembly, Brighton and Hove Momentum and Sussex Defend the NHS are organising together to ensure this national demonstration provides an opportunity for our community in Brighton and Hove to show how much we value our NHS.

We expect more Brighton and Hove residents to go to London for this event to make their feelings known, than annually migrate to Glastonbury!

So save the date, tell your friends and watch this space for transport arrangements from Brighton that we will announce very soon.

I, Daniel Blake - Free Screening
Monday 20 March
Doors 18:30 Film 19:15 - Speakers and Discussion
@ The Fulton Theatre, Sussex Campus, Falmer, University of Sussex

Brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing People’s Assembly in partnership with the University of Sussex Politics Society will screen Ken Loach’s critically acclaimed film – I Daniel Blake at the University of Sussex Fulton Theatre.  The screening will also include a speaker and an opportunity for some discussion. Please note that the date of this screening ischanged from the original scheduled date of 23 February. Admission to this event is free, however we would appreciate donations (suggested £5 waged and £2 unwaged).

Daniel Blake (59) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie's only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn't know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man's land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of 'striver and skiver' in modern day Britain.
Local Campaigns: Actions, Events & Meetings

March and Rally NHS is here to stay STP: NO WAY! Saturday 21st Jan 12.30pm

Sussex Defend the NHS, supported by B&H Trades Council

March leaves from outside Royal Sussex County Hospital. Rally 12.30 in front of Brighton station forecourt.

We are asking all local trade union branches and their members to bring banners and placards and support this march and rally. As a sign of solidarity with railway workers in dispute because of the effects of privatisation, we are marching from the County hospital to the railway station for a rally.

We are engaged in a life and death struggle to save the NHS. The Sustainability and Transformation Plans being imposed across England disguise radical cuts to staffing and services and open the door to even more ruthless privatisation. £22bn is already being cut from from NHS national funding; now NHS England demands the wiping out of local “deficits”, predicted to be £860 million at end of 5 years if services continue to be provided at current level. Don’t let our NHS die - throw out STPs! For more information see here.
