UCU Paris Update No. 1

Dear Colleague,

Paris Update No. 1

UCU is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation delegation to the Paris climate talks. On Friday we worked with our global federation - Education International - to highlight the role of education in a workshop at the summit venue. Around 100 people filled the room and heard presentations from affiliates in Niger and France as well as speakers from Students Organising for Sustainability and Trade Unions for Energy Democracy. The event was opened by Fred van Leeuwen, the General Secretary of EI, A report is on the web site:

There are major concerns that the agreement being drafted will not contain worker's rights and decent jobs in the operational text. This is despite extensive lobbying by the trade union side. An agreement that neglects human rights will struggle to get the public support needed for its implementation. Now the process of putting together the final text before Thursday begins. All the signs are that we will end up with something that falls well short of what is needed. The next update will report on this and the meeting organised for Monday night with Naomi Klein and Jeremy Corbyn.

Until then,

Graham
