Brighton People's Assembly Against Austerity News
Next Organising Meeting Wed 6th July 7.30pm @ Brighthelm Centre  - all welcome!
Thanks everyone who came along to the last Brighton People's Assembly meeting on Wednesday 1st June. Thanks to Sam for Chairing and Mike for minute-taking.
The meeting included our very first Lightening Teach in with Aidan Pettitt on the theme What's going on in Education? The following actions were identified:
  • Write to councillors or MPs about your feelings
  • Parents taking children out of school on key dates is important
  • Link Parents and teachers around schools' issues
  • June 29th: Attend big public meeting in Brighton- see below for details
  • July 5th: Support the teacher's strike
  • How can we link and co-ordinate with parents and the different groups.
We also discussed Voluntary Sector Charter Launch, The Synergy Centre and Workfare, and other actions against austerity. You can  click here to download the full minutes.

The next meeting's teach-in will be on Cooperatives and led by Matt from Mutual Aid in Sussex (MAIS).

The next Admin Group will be Monday 4th July at 6 - 6.45 at Lord Nelson - all welcome to join in planning for the next meetings.

A charter for for independent voluntary action, advocacy and citizen voice; against austerity policies; against the marketisation & privatisation of public services.

  • Orlando victims remembrance, Sun 19th June 9pm @ Brighton Seafront Love Sculpture ~ Please join in remembering by lighting a candle and show their families and friends that we all stand together and will never give up fighting against homophobia.
  • Southern Rail Protest, Mon 20th June 6.30pm @ Brighton Station ~ join the protest. It’s just to make our voice heard. We are merely pawns in corporate skulduggery – now’s the time to stand and be heard!
  • Bringing Corbyn's New Politics into UNISON, Wed 22 June 7pm @Community Base (South Wing entrance) ~ Organised by Momentum as UNISON conference fringe meeting to discuss not just how vital trade unions are in protecting working people in countering the onslaught from the Tory Government but also how they matter to Jeremy Corbyn as he seeks to democratise the Labour Party and transform Britain. Speakers include Momentum co-founder Jon Lansman, Ruth Cashman of Save Our Libraries, which campaigns with trade union support to save our public services, and leading UNISON representatives Gordon McKay, Jon Rogers & Dan Sartin, who will discuss how trade unions can be made more democratic. 
  • Mutual Aid in Sussex (MAIS) meeting, Wed 22nd June 6.30pm @ Coachwerks, 19A Hollingdean Terrace ~ Monthly meeting. Talk will follow at 8pm with Zoe Wangler, founding member and director of the Ecological Land Co-operative - set up to address the lack of affordable sites for ecological land based livelihoods in England. Will include a tour of the co-ops at Coachwerks. Please bring vegan food to share.
  • Refugee Week 18th-26th June ~ The theme of Refugee Week this year is Welcome #refugeeswelcome. During Refugee Week there are plays, events for children and art exhibitions and the Crossing Borders music festival. See listings on Sanctuary on Sea website.  
  • NHS privatisation and local democracy, Wed 29th June 6pm @ The Bevy, 50 Hillside ~ Part of the Brains at The Bevy series.
    A light hearted talk based on Carl Walker’s recent academic research on what is happening to the NHS and how the University can play a key role in helping to make sure that the people of Brighton and Hove get to have a dominant say in their future health services.
  • National Pensioners Convention Brighton & Hove Action Group Meeting, Monday 15th August, 14.00 - 16.00 @ Brighthelm Centre, Stanmer Rm ~ regular meeting to discuss and take action on issues related to older people in the area.
Sing for Pulse - Chuck SJ Hay, local musician who peformed at Small Revolutions last year, is releasing a track this monday, it can be pre ordered for £2, (or more if you want) and all the proceeds go towards the staff of pulse, Orlando. You'll receive the track instantly at 6pm this monday.

Brighton Tories Out General Strike/Protest/Direct Action
Mon 4th July 1pm @ Clocktower
A protest against the tory-led government that Brighton & Hove didn't vote for. We will meet at the clocktower as a central location, then march on and seperate in different "blocs" for different co-ordinated actions. All causes considered, all campaigns welcome. Details on facebook page here.
