Six years ago, an earthquake and tsunami hit the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan

Six years ago, an earthquake and tsunami hit the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, releasing radioactive material into the atmosphere in what was the biggest nuclear disaster since the explosion at Chernobyl twenty five years earlier.
At the time, a 12-mile compulsory evacuation zone was designated around the plant with 160,000 people ordered to move out of their homes.
The situation is not much better now - it has still not been deemed safe enough for tens of thousands of these to return to their homes. The company cleaning up the site has admitted that it is failing because of the high levels of radiation still present, with even robots dying.
As we commemorate the ongoing disaster, let's remember the dangers of nuclear power and why we shouldn't be building new nuclear power stations in the UK.
